They should know your struggles, your sacrifices, your victories and the impact you made while you were alive.
And this thought led us to the story of one of Nigeria’s remarkable women — Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti.
Who was she?
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a Nigerian educator, activist and women’s rights advocate. She was born in 1900 in Abeokuta, and she became one of the most influential women in Nigeria’s struggle for social and political change.
One of her greatest contributions was her leadership among the Egba women. She helped organize women to challenge unfair taxation and oppressive policies imposed on them by the colonial authorities and the traditional administration.
Through the Abeokuta Women’s Union, she mobilised thousands of women to demand justice, accountability and better treatment. Her activism contributed to significant political changes in Abeokuta, including the eventual removal of the Alake, Oba Ademola II, in 1948.
But Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s impact did not stop there.
She was also involved in Nigeria’s independence movement and became an advocate for women’s political participation and equal rights. She was one of the few Nigerian women of her time to travel internationally and engage in political activism beyond Nigeria.
She lived a life of courage, resistance and service.
And this is why her story made us think:
What if our heroes wrote their own stories before they left this world?
Perhaps future generations would not only know that Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was a great woman; they would understand why she became great.
