You have heard of Nigerian politicians… but have you heard of the minister whose murder remains unsolved?
Few days ago, we were reading a particular history book when we came across the story of Chief Bola Ige, a Nigerian politician and lawyer. Out of curiosity, we decided to conduct more research about him, and what we discovered really caught our attention.
Who was Bola Ige?
Chief Bola Ige was a prominent Nigerian lawyer, politician, former Governor of old Oyo State, and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He later served as Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
He was widely respected for his intelligence, powerful speeches, and contributions to Nigeria’s democracy and the legal profession. He was a man who had made a significant impact in both politics and law.
But sadly, on 23 December 2001, while still serving as Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige was murdered in his home at Bodija Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State.
He was reportedly shot by unknown gunmen in his bedroom.
What makes this story even more painful is that, despite investigations, arrests and court proceedings, no one was ultimately convicted for his murder.
Several people were accused and prosecuted, but the case ended without a conviction. Till today, the identity of the person or persons who ordered and carried out the assassination remains unresolved.
And this made us ask ourselves one important question:
If a sitting Attorney-General and Minister of Justice could be murdered in his own home and the perpetrators remain unconvicted, what does that tell us about justice and accountability in our society?
This is why history matters. Sometimes, the stories we read about our heroes are not just stories, they are reminders of the work that still needs to be done.
Chief Bola Ige’s story remains a painful chapter in Nigeria’s history, and his murder remains one of the country’s most notable unsolved political assassinations.
