Introduction

The misleading Narrative

The misleading narrative from nollywood to legal profession is alarming. These people mislead a lot of people out there especially the young ones who are willingly to become a lawyer because of their unethical conduct. Imagine our eight year old sister telling us she want to become a lawyer because she want to be shouting “Objection my lord” in the court room. I don’t blame her because that is what they brought to them in movies.

Let dive in.

You will see a scene in a movie where the lawyer of the deceased will gather family members in the parlour to read the will. No! This does not happen in real life cases. There is something we called PROBATE REGISTRY. It is a department of high court that handles the legal process for administering a deceased person’s estate. The registry issues grants of probate and letter of administration which give legal authority to those who will manage the estate.
I wonder where and why Nollywood are not adding this, even if they don’t have the knowledge they can hire those that will guide them.

Secondly, in the Nigeria movie industry you will see their “So called” lawyer shouting in the court room “Objection my lord”. Can you imagine? In the court room where my lords are sitting, Senior Advocate of Nigeria are on sit, Where Senior lawyers are present. Where do you think you are? Oje market? No this would never happen because court room is a place of learning where everybody learn.

In reality you hardly hear lawyer saying “Objection my lord” and if they will say that it is my lord that will ask “Mr A any Objection to that? Is now left for Mr. A to say Yes or No or better still if my lord didn’t ask, counsel can rise Objection and it is always in a polite manner like “My lords am Objection to that please”. I wonder where the nollywood see all these abnormalities they are giving us.

Some many lies, fiction Nigeria movie industry are giving us, you will see an arbitrator presiding over a criminal matter. Come on! The law governing Nigeria movie industry need to be checked.

You will see in there movie where lawyers dress unkept and shabbily. They will dress for a judge with a colored collar like a baby bib.

There was a time I watched a Yoruba movie, I forget the tittle Jide Kosoko is the judge, an accused was brought to court telling the judge that he told the police that “Ti ori olopa o ba pe o ye ki ori adajo o le pe” which means If the police is not reasonable then the judge should be reasonable. I smiled when I see this, if you try this in real court you will rot in jail. Who do you think you are addressing?

If Nigeria movie industry can’t do well in legal profession scene then they should stop it, it is not necessary.

Foreign movie would show case almost perfect legal system which gives its audience a clear insight on how legal system works. In Nigeria, Legal movies create a distortion and funny apology out of a very serious profession.
